THURSDAY the 20th of JANUARY, 2011

Nice day eh? She's a bundle up day that's for sure. I waited this morning until mid-morning before I went for my run, 10:30a.m. At that time it was -27*C. Sunny but a breeze out of the SouthWest.

The roads have some ice pack on them and tend to be a little uneven in spots. I guess with the snow falls, traffic and now the very cold temps. But....... the Legion Park Pathways are excellent footing. You can motor along in there with very good footing. So, make it part of your route. Park at the Arena, and jog in the Legion Park. Someday soon we'll be back running on bare asphalt.

An article, for what it's worth, that I read on burning calories walking or running. It kinda goes in circles. Take what you want out of it.

How You Burn Calories
Your weight x distance = energy used walking. Time does not matter as much as distance. If you speed up to walking a mile in 13 minutes or less, you will be burning more calories per mile.

100 calories per mile for a 180 pound person.
1 lb. of fat = 3500 calories

Note About the Calories Chart
You burn more calories per mile at very low speeds because you are basically stopping and starting with each step and your momentum isn't helping to carry you along. Meanwhile, at very high walking speeds you are using more muscle groups with arm motion and with a racewalking stride. Those extra muscles burn up extra calories with each step. Running may burn more calories per mile as there is an up and down motion lifting your weight off the ground as well as moving it forward.

Question for you: Do you burn more calories running in the cold?

keep give'n'er,
gk
