JANUARY 7th, THURSDAY MORNING

A bit of a chilly one this morning. -30*C on my glass and a slight breeze out of the South East. Doesn't take much of a breeze at that temp. Sort of facing into the breeze going down 2nd Street North toward Morely's and then headed into it on PTH #83. I was comfortable except for my hands. I was wearing two ply knit-mitts. Normaly these are good as the hands stay dryier in there than in a nylon shell/thinso type mitt. But today, the breeze penetrated the knit-mitts and the fingers got a little tingly. Otherwise I was dressed warm enough. I basically had two complete body layers on and then a shell and reflective vest. My right knee has been giving me a bit of trouble and so I pulled on an extra layer ( an 18" slip on knee warmer - I used knee warmers when I was biking. In the morning when I started out before sun up it was cool. I'd go with the bicyle shorts and then pull on the knee warmers. After a couple hours, I could slip the knee warms off easy and continue on biking.) On my head this morning, I had a double knitt toque, a tube on my neck and then a neoprean half mask that covered the nose and cheeks. This half mask thing, I attached loosley over my mouth, nose and cheeks - sort of like that loose neck thing that goalies wear. It worked good - you didn't feel restricted in getting air. The air came in around the edges easy. My eye lashes frosted up a bit but a squinty blink cleared them. My ice cleats didn't work as good this morning as on Tuesday. That's because I put one on inside out. When I started out, I couldn't figure it out. I thought I had lost a cleat, then I thought some ice or snow was packed in there. Then as I went along I figured it out - in my haste to get out the door in the dark, I had put one ice-cleat on inside out. I drove those thunstun pins into my runner instead of the ice. But it was too cold out to stop and go barehands and fix it. I just finished the run the way it was.
So that's it for January 7th. Next run will be Tuesday morning January 12th, 2010

Notice the Date to Mark down next to this posting on the blog. Keep that in mind; something to shoot for mid-winter and the weather will be warmer than this morning and a whole lot more daylight. Maybe Derrick and Patti can give us a bit more coverage in the Star & Times so that everyone knows about the run, thanks very much.

Have a good week-end,
Keep give'n'er,
gk
